Our Dentists Understand Your Anxiety

If you haven’t been to a dental office recently, you may be surprised to know that dentists today take a proactive approach to the problem of dental anxiety. They know they can’t help you if you’re too nervous even to make a dental appointment. And untreated oral health problems impact your appearance, confidence, and quality of life.

How Sedation Dentistry Helps

Sedation dentistry helps many anxious patients get necessary dental care. Your Blackburn Clinic Dental Centre dentist offers two options for helping you relax: oral conscious sedation and IV sedation. Here’s how these methods can help you:

  • Oral conscious sedation is exactly that; you take a calming medication by mouth, and you will remain awake but feel very sleepy and relaxed. The medication will help you achieve deep relaxation. Although you’ll still be conscious and responsive, you’ll have little to no memory of what happened during your appointment. Oral sedation works well for patients suffering from mild to moderate anxiety.
  • IV or intravenous sedation involves administering the drugs directly into your bloodstream. Effects are immediate, and you may fall asleep briefly, but you will wake up quickly and respond to verbal cues from your dental team. In this option, we administer medication directly into your bloodstream intravenously. Your heart rate and vital signs are monitored constantly throughout your procedure. You’ll also have little to no memory of what occurred during your appointment, and IV sedation works well for patients with severe anxiety, special needs, or who need to complete multiple procedures at one time.

Since oral conscious and IV sedation both have lingering after-effects, you will need a friend or relative to drive you safely to and from your dental appointment.

If you’re ready to say goodbye to dental anxiety and hello to a healthier smile, call Blackburn Clinic Dental Centre today on 03 9878 1597 to schedule a dental appointment to learn more.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek an opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
