- BRUSH AT LEAST TWICE A DAY – PROPERLY!
Ideally, you’ll want to brush after every meal. But if you can’t make that work, it’s recommended that you brush twice a day – once in the morning and once before bed.
Proper brushing means brushing for at least two minutes, and using an effective technique. To ensure you remove maximum plaque and bacteria, hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle, and use short, circular strokes on every surface of your teeth. For an electric toothbrush, simply hold the brush head on the tooth surface for 3 seconds. Make sure that you brush the outside, top, and inside of both your upper and lower teeth. - LIMIT YOUR INTAKE OF SOFT DRINKS AND ALCOHOL
The high sugar content and acidity of soda, and many alcoholic beverages, makes them very bad for your oral health. You don’t have to stop drinking soda and alcohol altogether, but it is recommended that you limit your intake. Drinking tap water is the best drink for your health and teeth! Drinking water after sugary foods or drinks can help dilute the sugars and acids in the mouth.

- FLOSS EVERY DAY (YES, SERIOUSLY!)
We know that flossing is hard to master, but it’s worth it. If you floss every day, you can dramatically reduce your risk of gingivitis and periodontal disease. You will also be able to fight back against bad breath and tooth decay. Interdental brushes are another great way to clean in between teeth – speak to your dentist to find out what is right for you.

- DON’T FORGET TO BRUSH YOUR TONGUE!
Your tongue is affected by bacterial buildup, just like your gums and teeth! So don’t forget to brush your tongue. Using short strokes, begin at the rear of your tongue, and work towards the front. This helps keep your breath fresh. When you’re done, rinse with water.
You can also use a specialized tongue scraper to clean your tongue, if desired.
- GET A TEETH CLEANING REGULARLY
There is no substitute for a professional teeth cleaning, even if you have a fantastic oral hygiene regimen. Professional cleaning from a dental hygienist is much more effective at removing plaque and bacteria, as well as calculus. Calculus (or tartar) is a rock-like substance that builds up on the teeth over time, and irritates the gums. Your dentist will be able to advise you on how often to have a check-up, depending on your situation.
A professional clean also helps your dentist keep an eye on your oral health, and spot issues like cavities and gingivitis before they become severe. So don’t ignore your regular checkup.
